Posted by admin | SEO Reseller | Tuesday 28 September 2010 8:27 am

Anyone who has involvement with SEO knows that to be successful in getting to that page one position you need to do a series of external link building for your site to ensure that the search engines recognize the strength of your site and positions it accordingly.

You may feel that it is essential to get as many links pointing to your site as possible and that every link will benefit you no matter where it comes from….a common mistake.

The main thing that anyone involved in Internet marketing needs to learn is that search engines look at the quality of links over the quantity. As each link acts  as a vote for your site to the search engines of quality and relevance it is important to have these votes from reputable sites that in the eyes of the Internet are of good quality themselves.

Ensuring that you get your links from sites that possess a few certain qualities will put you in a good place to get your site recognized by the search engines and place you higher up the SERP’s.

Ensure the site you are getting a link from has a page rank:

It is more beneficial to get a link off a page from another site that already has a page rank. Getting a link off one of these sites will enable some of this page rank ‘juice’ to be filtered onto your site increasing your own sites page rank.  Its not always essential but it certainly has more benefits to the progression of your site on a longer term basis if you can achieve this.

Make sure the links are ‘Follow Links’:

Look at an existing outgoing links that already feature on the website you are looking at trying to get a link from will enable you to see if the links they provide are follow or no follow. A no follow link means that the link will offer no SEO benefits to your site so its not really worth taking the time to get a link from this site. If you highlight the link text and ‘view selection source’ you will be able to see in the code if it says ‘nofollow’.  If this text isn’t there then this link will give your site SEO benefit.

Ensure that your links come from industry related sites:

If your site is one for a hair and beauty salon you would benefit more by having links from other sites within the hair, beauty and health industries as these are of a similar theme.  A builders site could go for links on sites that are related to home improvement and home maintenance. Looking for quality industry directories across the Internet with this theme in mind and looking for other websites within these similar industries that have a links page may also be worth contacting to see if they will add a link from their site to yours.

Check out your competitors:

Look at the websites that are currently on page 1 in the search engines and copy their URL into yahoo site explorer. Click on the inlinks tab and this will enable you to see a list of everywhere your competitors have external links that point to their site. Going through these lists of links will show you places that you can also apply for links to.

Add links to your site in blogs and articles:

Writing articles related to your site containing your keywords are beneficial if you get them distributed across the Internet on various article sites that have good page ranks and follow links etc. Create a link within these articles back to your site. The same can be done in blog commenting and guest blogging on other high quality sites in the industry.

If you follow these tips when researching the best places for you to get links from to your website you will ensure that your links are of a good quality and this will lead your site on the road to success.

Why SEO is NOT Important for Blogs

Posted by admin | SEO Reseller | Saturday 25 September 2010 9:41 am

Blogging is about creating a continual steady stream of information and building your blog as a source of information related to your market.

Other then the traditional SEO functions such as SEF URLs, post titles, relevant content and auto-populated description tags there is little importance in keyword stuffing meta tags or any other ‘traditional’ technique of optimizing a website. Any blog design should already include a number of the beneficial aspects of SEO including H tags as the basis of your individual post page titles as well as any post information that you include.

Because blogs do not primarily focus on building exposure for a single post or page SEO aspects such as keyword density and such simply lose their overall value. If you are creating articles about relevant topics you are most likely naturally including keyword rich content so the focus of your blog becomes more about writing articles on interesting topics and utilizing social media avenues such as social bookmarking sites to increase the exposure of your blog posts and link popularity of your blog on a whole.

Technically you could consider optimizing the main category pages of your blog, but again, optimization on a page by page basis is not the focus of the blog itself as streamlining your blogging process is gravely important as you look to post on a daily basis. SEO overall is most beneficial for static informational or product pages on a site where you are looking to increase that specific pages exposure.

In blogging and building relevant information pertaining to that page’s focus you will most likely look to expand upon the information you offer pertaining to that page whether it be news, product breakdowns, reviews or any other important topics surrounding your focus.

Blog platforms are also a very diverse and powerful platform. WordPress has extensive plugins for everything from creating a review site to building your own social media platform. Especially if you are looking to utilize your blog as a way to build link popularity and increased exposure for your ,posting and social bookmarking become the most streamlined way of accomplishing this. Since link building, in my opinion, is not a traditional aspect of SEO, no single SEO technique outweighs the fundamental reason a blog is created and why any business needs to get involved in social media with their business blog as the hub.

Any website on the other hand should have key components in place in order to target visibility in any major search engines. Contradictory to popular belief, more focus should be placed on categorization and the overall setup of your site not keyword stuffing.

Only once you have established a solid setup will the true benefits of building link popularity be seen through your website’s natural search engine listings.

QR Codes – Few Direct SEO Implications, But Still Important To Watch

Posted by admin | SEO Reseller | Saturday 25 September 2010 9:30 am

If you’ve been reading any print media lately, you may have noticed some unusual looking square barcodes embedded within ads. Known as QR codes, they are essentially paper-based hyperlinks that can be translated by smartphones, and lead to websites. Many newspaper advertisers, like restaurants, use them to offer special deals that are not available to the average reader.

The great thing about QR codes is that you don’t have to be an engineer to build them if you want to put them in ads. There are several QR code generators out there online, and there are QR code makers in the form of software. Because the QR code is built through a third party, it works equally well with Android and iPhone apps. For the user, it may be necessary to download a specific QR code reading application. There are even some alternative versions of the QR code, so it may be necessary to have more than one scanning app if you are the one doing the reading.

Can QR codes be used in link building? Right now, the jury is out, but this may be something to consider if you have content that can be accessed on mobile devices. If you generate QR codes by way of websites or software, the search engines may be looking through lists of these links to discover pages they haven’t found before. Therefore, the links themselves may not pass the same type of value as a text link, but they would still be useful in getting pages noticed. As always, there can be secondary natural link building if you use a WR code to get someone to look at your product pages, and then they use your actual link in blogs or other postings.

Until the use of QR codes becomes a bit more ubiquitous, the SEO and SEM implications for using them are going to be up in the air. Nonetheless, it is still a good idea to keep an eye on this segment of technology, since the way people use the internet on smartphones is going to create a new emphasis on features that were impossible to offer users who were tethered to a computer. The game-changing reality of the mobile internet is going to have a radical impact on how sites make money in the future, and QR codes may very well be the bridge between print and digital that keeps your brand in the viewer’s mind.

Google’s SEO algorithm to always remain a secret

Posted by admin | SEO Reseller | Thursday 23 September 2010 6:48 am

Last Saturday Web Pro News had a post about Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, and his frustration at always being asked about the ranking algorithm.

Schmidt was asked why Google doesn’t list its 200 ranking factors.

“Because we change them… And the fundamental answer is we’re always changing…if we started saying here’s how the black box works, then all of a sudden huge incumbencies would come out about this change and that change, and we just don’t want that pressure.”

I’m sure Schmidt is sick of people trying to squeeze SEO tidbits out of him but he should probably except it comes with his job, I’m sure his house made of gold does enough to comfort him though*.

I’m surprised his answer revolved around the pressure and scrutiny that would come from the SEO/web community rather than the potential, and probable, abuse of the algorithm.

The piece on Web Pro News came from an interview between Schmidt and Danny Sullivan from Search Engine Land.

In the accompanying piece to that video Sullivan lists other sites, blogs and forums where a lot of the ranking factors have been worked out and suggested, and Google give advice as to how best prepare your site for Ranking.

I can understand people wanting to know all of the algorithm, or even most of it, but I’m leaning towards Schmidt here if the Google algorithm became public knowledge then it would be exploited by nefarious types.

Amit Singhal from Google has stated “Making our systems 100% transparent would not help users, but it would help the bad guys and spammers who try game the system.”

That’s one of the problems with SEO, it can be so beneficial and rewarding that people are always looking for shortcuts and easy ways to make a mint.

Eric Schmidt may not have a house of gold.
